Virtual Spon EndThe Arches |
|
The Arches, a major feature of Spon End, was built as a 28 arch railway viaduct spanning the area and the River Sherbourne. Work on the forty foot spans began in August 1848 and took ten months to complete. Unfortunately, in the early hours of 26 January 1857, 23 arches collapsed. In 1859 the ten central arches were reconstructed in blue brick and other sections were made into an embankment. Some of the remaining stone arches were reinforced with tie bars and the line was eventually reopened on 1 October 1860. The line is still in use.
